Description

Upgrading your brakes? Be sure to consider these Shimano XT SM-RT86 Ice-Tech rotors.

Ice-Tech is Shimano's approach to high-performance braking by reducing operating temperatures. Ice-Tech rotors are a two-piece floating design for increased stiffness and they feature a 3-layer construction. There's an aluminium core sandwiched between two stainless steel outer layers. Aluminium dissipates heat quickly which works perfectly for braking. When combined with Shimano brakes and Ice-Tech pads, riders will notice consistent performance, reduced brake fade and less brake noise.

If you are replacing rotors or looking to upgrade, these should be a strong contender.

Who's this item for: Any rider chasing a great value for money, reliable solid rotor.

Mounting standard: Standard 6-Bolt

Materials: Stainless steel and aluminum.

Brake pad compatibility: You can use either metal (sintered) or resin (organic) brake pads on these rotors. Works best with Shimano brakes using Ice-Tech pads.

What's in the box: One SM-RT86 6 Bolt Rotor with 6 rotor bolts

Features:

  • Two-piece floating rotor
  • Ice-Tech technology.

Pros: High performance from a value for money and reliable rotor

Cons: Not much this is a great all round rotor

Please note: If you are increasing rotor size, please check with your frame and fork manufacturer. Certain models have max recommended rotor sizes and going beyond these sizes can cause severe damage. Also, if you increase rotor size you will need to use different adaptors.

    True, silent and grippy

The rotor is absolutely true, it is nice and quiet and has smooth strong braking when used with a XT M8000 calliper and resin pads. As good as I have used.

    Ice-Tech Rotors - 203(F) 180 (R)

Swapped out the Tektro 180mm rotors and installed 203mm front (with adapter) and 180mm rear. I also installed Tektro ceramic pads from another supplier as unfortunately MTB Direct did not carry these.

Massive difference to the braking smoothness and performance! This combo wipes speed off a heavy ebike better than I could have imagined.

Don't forget to check and replace your discs!

My lever throw was difficult to adjust (levers almost going to the bars) and I found that my discs were quite a bit thinner than the minimum replacement thickness that is printed on them... new discs worked a treat - lever throw issue is fixed and braking power is much improved.
