If you never want to have an outer casing cap blow out again, these are for you!
Aluminium shift casing caps are recommended for use on the derailleur end when used on a bike with rear suspension due to the extra movement the cable may experience as the suspension compresses. Alloy caps are stronger than plastic ones and will resist deformation. They are also sealed with a small internal o-ring to prevent dirt from getting into your cable housing.
