Save your fingers and get that star-nut in straight with this great Star Nut Setting Tool from Risk.
The threaded punch gets screwed into your star nut and positioned over the fork steerer. The aluminium 'handle' slips over the punch giving you somewhere stable and not-so-dangerous to hold the steerer while you bash it with a big hammer. The handle sitting squarely on top of your steerer ensures that the punch and therefore the star nut goes-in square and is seated to the correct depth.
It's such a simple tool but it can make a huge difference to how easily and accurately your star nut is installed, and given how important your star nut is (yes, think about it) it's definitely worth it.
