It's not worth it, and the hassle of hunting down replacements for your mangled snap rings will more than outweigh the few dollars you might save. These quality tools from Park will do the job in seconds, meaning more time riding, and less time cursing.

Designed and built with the specific needs of the bike mechanic in mind. The RP-SET includes five professional quality pliers for internal snap rings and one for external snap rings, All made from forged heat-treated cro-moly steel with return springs and vinyl dipped grips.
Set includes:
1x RP-1: 0.9MM INTERNAL RETAINING RING PLIERS
.9mm tips on straight blades for small, internal snap rings. The tips open from 22mm to 0 (tips touching).
1x RP-2: 1.3MM INTERNAL RETAINING RING PLIERS
1.3mm tips on bent nose blades for medium, internal snap rings. The tips open from 22mm down to 2mm (centre to centre).
1x RP-3: 1.3MM EXTERNAL RETAINING RING PLIERS
1.3mm tips on bent nose blades for medium, external snap rings.
1x RP-4: 1.7MM INTERNAL RETAINING RING PLIERS
1.7mm tips on bent nose blades for larger, internal snap rings. The tips open from 21mm down to 2mm (centre to centre).
1x RP-5: 1.7MM INTERNAL RETAINING RING PLIERS
