Buying Guide - Differences between KS Dropper Seat Posts?
July 5, 2017

KS (or Kind Shock) make a massive range of dropper seat posts. Figuring out what is the right post can be a real challenge so, we thought we'd make life a bit easier and compare all the different adjustable height seat posts they make.

KS is one of the largest dropper seat post manufacturers in the world and is renown for their quality and reliability.

Terminology:

Remotes - All KS seatposts (Except the lever actuated ones) are supplied with essentially the same remote. It's handlebar mounted unit that can also replace an ODI grip lockring (only works on their dual lockring grip models). The differences between the remotes are the materials they are constructed out of. KS remotes are manufactured in either:

  • KGP Polycarbonate - Essentially a plastic remote. This is the most basic remote
  • KG Alloy - An Alloy unit, this sits in the middle tier
  • KGSL Carbon - The top of the line carbon lever. This looks sleeker and shaves some grams too.

If you'd prefer a shifter style remote, that sits under the bar, KS also make the KS Southpaw Remote, or there is a heap of aftermarket options available too from Wolf Tooth, BikeYoke, Cane Creek or RaceFace.

Cable System - KS include all necessary cables with their posts. They supply one of the following two types of cables:

  • Standard Cables - A standard stainless steel shifter inner cable and standard gear outer housing.
  • Recourse Ultralight Cable System - This system does away with the standard wire stranded cables and replaces them with the most advanced tech available. Saves 25g!

Mast Material - This is the lower part of the post that slides is clamped into your frame. Made from either Alloy or Carbon.

Seat Clamp Mechanism -  The lower priced options run a single bolt system with a series of notches, that give a finite number of angles your seat can be set up at. The better posts all run a twin bolt micro adjust system. This gives not only a stronger connection but allows you to adjust the saddle angle infinitely to achieve the angle you want.

Seat Clamp Offset - The E-Ten series posts use a 20mm set back (the saddle is 20mm offset from the centre line of the post), while the LEV series all use a 0mm offset so the saddle sits directly over the post.

Lower Cradle - This is the part that the seat rails actually sit on top of. The top level posts use a High Compression Carbon unit to shave some grams, while the majority use a more economical Forged Alloy unit

Roller Bearing - KS patented technology - Underneath the main DU Bushing, the majority of KS posts use a one-way Roller clutch bearing that dramatically reduces side to side play.

We'll split these posts into 3 categories to start with.

1. Integra Models - these are internally routed, (aka stealth routed) where the cable attaches to the very bottom of the seatpost, then the cable runs inside your frames seat tube. Your frame must be compatible with internal routeing to select one of these posts. (It just needs a spot for the cable to exit the frame.)

2. External Cable Models - As the name suggests, the cable does not run inside the frame at all. There are 2 different ways the cables can attach to external cable models.

  • Collar Mount - Also called Zero Movement as the cable does not move as the seat post goes up and down. This is definitely the preferred mounting position.
  • Top Of Post - This means the cable connects to the post just under your saddle. This is less desirable as the cable will move every time you put the post up and down. It's more likely to get snagged and isn't as clean looking as the collar mounted versions.

3. Lever Actuated - No cables at all on these. They are simply actuated by a lever underneath the saddle. This does mean you have to take a hand off the bar to adjust which is not ideal for safety nor ease of access.
