Collection: Mountain Bike Helmets
The best MTB helmets for men and women are at MTB Direct
Discover Australia’s largest range of dedicated mountain bike helmets, designed to keep you safe and comfortable on every side. Choose from a variety of open face and full face helmets, suitable for all riding styles from downhill to enduro. All helmets sold on MTB Direct achieve the Australian safety standards.
For downhill or enduro mountain bike riding, we recommend full face helmets which offer superior protection compared to open face designs. While full face MTB helmets may be heavier and provide less ventilation they offer added protection for riders who prioritise safety while riding more aggressive trails.
Our helmets feature an adjustable fit along at least one place excluding some of our full face and dirt jump helmets. Generally, MTB helmets will feature an adjustable internal harness to conform the helmet to the circumference of your head. Some designs offer forms of internal adjustment such as the ability to alter the vertical height of the internal frame. Read our blog to learn more about how to adjust your helmet.
For more extreme riding like downhill racing, we suggest wearing the right protective gear including a neck brace. Neck braces are proven to reduce the severity of neck injuries and don’t impede your movement on the bike when sized and adjusted correctly. Check out our neck braces suitable for men, women, and teenagers.
While it is possible to wear goggles with the majority of our mountain bike helmets there are certainly a number of helmets that are more compatible with goggles. If you enjoy general trail riding on the weekend and are not serious about downhill or enduro then we recommend viewing our MTB glasses which offer protection against glare, wind, and debris.
What kind of MTB helmet should I get?
We stock a wide range of mountain bike helmets designed to suit different riding styles:
- Open Face (Half-Shell) Helmets
Lightweight and well-ventilated, open face helmets are ideal for trail, cross-country, and everyday MTB riding (where comfort and airflow matter most).
- Full Face Helmets
Offering maximum coverage including chin protection, full face helmets are best suited for downhill, enduro, and bike park riding, where higher speeds and impacts are more likely.
- Convertible Helmets
Designed for versatility, convertible helmets allow you to remove or attach the chin bar, making them a smart option for riders who tackle both climbs and technical descents in a single ride.
What features should I look for when buying a MTB helmet?
For mountain bikers, the most important feature to look for in a helmet is certified impact protection. Mips technologies help manage rotational forces during a crash, while extended rear coverage improves protection on technical trails. Other features that are important include adjustable fit systems, and adequate ventilation for your riding conditions (particularly in Australia, where hot and humid weather is common). Comfort features such as moisture-wicking liners and easy strap adjustment also make a big difference on longer rides.
Can I wear goggles or sunglasses with MTB helmets?
Yes, many of our mountain bike helmets are designed to be compatible with goggles or sunglasses, though some styles work better than others depending on the fit and visor design. Check the product details section for more information.
