Description

With a fast but quiet 7-degree pick-up, and Microspline freehub interface, the m8100 hub from Shimano lets you run the new 12-speed Shimano cassettes.

Who's this for: Riders wanting to run the new wave of Shimano 12-speed cassettes.

Engagement: A reasonably fast 7 degrees.

Convertibility: Only compatible in its stock configuration.

Bearing style: Using labyrinth and contact sealed, polished cup and cone bearings.

Brake rotor mount: Centrelock.

Pros: Quiet, fast, Microspline.

Cons: Miscrospline and centrelock only.

    Disappointing design fault

    I bought this hub in Sept 2019 and got it built up by TWE (to get away from SRAM 12sp). I loved the design of the freehub, and all other specs are great.

    But unfortunately there is something really wrong with the design.

    After about 30-40hrs of use, a really annoying scuffing sound developed every pedal stroke. I removed and checked every component of drive train and could not find the noise. So concluded it was in hub.

    I arranged with my LBS to send it away for warranty check in March 2020. 3 weeks with no MTB. Shimano returns it saying they have replaced the freehub, but wouldn't tell us any more than that.

    The freehub worked fine for about 3 months, and now the same noise has developed. I've pulled the freehub off and identified the face of the spring is really scuffed up and likely the cause of the noise.

    Now I'm booked in for my bike shop to do an over the phone tear down with Shimano (in hope that I don't have to send it away for 3 weeks again).
